Keyless entry covers a wider range of hardware than most people expect when they start looking. At one end is a battery keypad on a residential front door that stores half a dozen codes and answers to nobody. At the other is a wired opening at a business, with a reader on the outside, a release device in the frame, a button on the inside, and a controller deciding what is allowed. The one thing to take away

A keyless lock is a credential upgrade — it changes how permission is granted and taken away. It is not a strength upgrade. Resistance to force still comes from the grade of the deadbolt, the depth the bolt throws, and whether the strike plate is fixed with screws long enough to reach the framing behind the jamb. Fit a keypad and leave a short bolt in a plate held by trim screws and you have gained convenience and nothing else.

Standalone keypads, connected locks, and knowing which you need

A standalone keypad deadbolt runs on batteries and stores its codes internally. There is no hub, no account, no subscription, no network. Everything is programmed at the door. For a house where the people who need access are the people who live there, plus a relative and someone who feeds the dog, this is usually the correct answer and the cheapest to keep running. It has almost nothing that can go wrong remotely because there is no remote.

A connected lock adds a radio so codes can be issued and revoked from somewhere else, and so you can see a log of who opened the door and when. That matters if you own a property you do not live at, run a shift business, or hand access to trades and cleaners you do not intend to meet. It also adds a chain — lock, batteries, radio, hub, internet service, manufacturer account — and any single link in that chain can take the remote features down while the door itself still works fine from the keypad.

The test we suggest: name out loud the thing you want to do from your phone. If you cannot finish the sentence, buy the standalone. If you can — "cancel the cleaner's code on the day she stops working here, without driving out there" — the connected lock is worth its extra complexity.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and mesh radios

Bluetooth reaches a short distance and sips power. It is a phone-at-the-door technology. Batteries last well. There is no remote capability unless something else in the building relays for the lock.

Wi-Fi joins your router directly, needs no extra box, and works from anywhere you have signal. It is also the heaviest power draw on the door by a wide margin, because a radio that must stay reachable cannot sleep the way a Bluetooth radio does.

Low-power mesh radios use very little power and each device repeats for its neighbours, so coverage improves as the system grows. The trade is that they cannot talk to your router alone — a hub has to sit somewhere powered and online to translate.

Distance and mass are the two things that beat Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi signal is absorbed by mass and it falls off fast with distance. Both work against a lock. An entry door commonly sits behind brick veneer, block, stucco, or a steel door and steel frame, and the router is usually in an interior room on the far side of the house because that is where the service enters.

Around Crestview there is a second version of this problem that coastal installers rarely meet: buildings that are simply far apart. A shop, a barn, a detached garage or a gate at the end of a long drive can be well past the point where house Wi-Fi is usable, and a lock out there will show as connected while sitting on the ragged edge — working until the day it does not. Why the battery reading lies

The most frequent false diagnosis in keyless entry is "it can't be the batteries, they read fine." Here is why that reading is misleading.

A cell has one voltage sitting idle and a different one while it is being asked for current. As a battery ages, its internal resistance rises. The idle figure — which is what a meter shows and what the lock reports — barely moves. But the instant the motor tries to drive the bolt, the voltage sags, torque drops away, and the motor stalls halfway or never starts. The lock reports a jam, or a fault, or nothing at all, while its own battery indicator still shows charge.

This is exactly why a door that nobody has been near for three weeks fails on the day somebody arrives. The low-battery chirp did its job — in an empty building, for its programmed number of days, with nobody there to hear it — and then gave up.

Practical consequences:

The door is the variable, not the lock

When a keyless lock "stops working" for no apparent reason, the lock is usually innocent. The door moved.

Turning a key gives you a wrist and a lever arm. You feel the bolt catching and unconsciously push harder, so a door can drift badly out of alignment for years without anyone noticing. A small electronic motor has no such reserve — it produces the torque it produces, and the moment the bolt begins to rub against the edge of the strike, that motor is the first thing in the system to fail. Humidity swings, hinge screws working loose in old timber, and a frame knocked out of true are all ordinary causes.

Open door, closed door — the ten-second check

Swing the door fully open so the bolt has only air in front of it, and throw it by hand with the thumbturn. Now close the door and throw it again.

Every keyless installation we do ends with that check and with the strike corrected so the bolt drops through the middle of its hole with clearance all round. A bolt that only just clears on installation day has no margin for the next season.

Retrofit or replace

Some keyless hardware is designed to keep the existing outside cylinder and change only the inside of the door, which means you keep the keys you already carry. Other hardware replaces the deadbolt entirely. Three measurements decide what is possible:

Where an old or unusual lock leaves holes that do not line up with modern hardware, that is repairable but it is prep, and it belongs in the quote rather than as a surprise mid-job. A photo of the door edge and existing hardware usually settles it over the phone.

Mechanical override and the physical key

Most keypad deadbolts keep a keyed cylinder. That cylinder is your way in when batteries are flat, the keypad has taken water, or the lock has lost its programming — and it is also the part an attacker would look at, so a very good electronic lock paired with a poor cylinder is not a good lock. Where the hardware allows, we key that cylinder to a key you already carry so you are not adding to the ring.

Then decide where the override key lives, and decide it properly: not under a mat, not in an ornament by the step, not on a rail beside the door. With a person, off the property, or in a box you control that is fixed to something structural. A few fully electronic models omit the cylinder altogether and rely on an external power contact instead — a legitimate design, but one that changes your fallback plan, and worth knowing before a flat-battery night rather than during one.

Electronic access control for shops, offices and light industrial

Once more than a handful of people need through a door, keys stop being manageable. Somebody leaves and you either rekey the building or accept that a working key is out there in unknown hands. Electronic access control closes that gap: a credential is removed from the system and the problem ends that afternoon, with nothing to collect and no locks to change.

How the release actually happens

Electric strikes replace the strike plate in the frame. The door keeps its normal latch or lock; the frame simply lets the latch out when released. This is the least intrusive option and it suits most single wood or hollow-metal doors.

Magnetic locks hold the door shut with an electromagnet mounted at the head of the frame and a steel plate on the door. They hold hard and have no moving parts, but a magnet only holds while it is powered, so every maglock opening needs a deliberate, code-compliant plan for how people get out — always, including in a power cut.

Readers and credentials are how the system knows who is asking. A keypad is a code you know. A card or fob is a thing you carry. A phone credential is a thing you already carry anyway. Cards and fobs are easy to hand out and easy to cancel; codes are free to create and get shared informally, which is the usual reason a code-only building slowly loses track of who can get in.

Request-to-exit devices — a button, a sensor above the door, or a switch built into the exit hardware — tell the controller that someone is legitimately leaving so the door releases and the alarm does not fire.

Fail-safe, fail-secure, and the rule that beats convenience

Fail-secure hardware stays locked when power is removed. Fail-safe hardware releases when power is removed. Which one belongs on a given door is not a preference — it is set by the building code and the fire plan for that opening, and it varies from door to door within the same building.

Underneath both sits the rule that overrides every other consideration on the list: free egress. Whatever the entry side demands, a person inside must be able to leave through that door without a code, without a card, without a key, and without knowing any special trick, using one motion. Any access control proposal that quietly trades that away for tidier control is the wrong proposal, and we will tell you so rather than fit it.

What the visit looks like

  1. Survey before anything is opened. Door construction, backset, bore, thickness, frame condition, how the door hangs, what signal exists at that spot, and — on a commercial opening — which doors are on the fire path.
  2. Fix the opening first. Hinges tightened, strike and strike box aligned, bolt throwing its full depth into a hole with clearance. This step is what decides whether the lock is still healthy in two years.
  3. Fit and commission. Hardware square and true, drive properly engaged, codes or credentials loaded, override cylinder keyed to a key you already hold where possible.
  4. Hand over. Accounts in your name, codes documented, battery date recorded, and the open-door and closed-door bolt check shown to you so you can diagnose the common fault without calling anyone.

What drives cost

We do not publish a figure for a door we have not seen, because the honest answer moves with four things: the hardware tier chosen, whether the door itself needs prep such as a new bore or a backset correction, whether the frame and strike need real work to let the bolt run free, and how many openings are covered in one visit. Wired access control adds cabling routes, a power supply and door hardware to that list. A quote comes after the door is looked at, and it is agreed before work starts.

Can I put a keypad on a door that already has a deadbolt I like?

Often yes — some hardware retrofits over the inside of an existing deadbolt and keeps the outside cylinder and your current key. Whether it fits comes down to the backset, bore and thickness measurements above.

Do codes still work if the internet goes down?

Yes. Codes live in the lock. What you lose is the remote half — issuing a new code from your phone, checking the log, receiving notifications. Anyone who genuinely needs to get in should already hold a working code rather than one you plan to send later.

I bought the place and the old owner set up the lock. Is that a problem?

It can be. A connected lock has an owner account and that account does not change hands with the property, so the previous holder may still be able to add codes and see the door open. Clearing it means a factory reset and re-enrolment under your account, and on some hardware the old account has to release the device from their side. Treat it the same way you would treat inherited keys — start fresh, and rekey the mechanical cylinders while you are at it.
